Feature Request: Diary comments in Replies

So, Scoop has the nifty feature of displaying new replies to a user's comments in a little box at the right of the screen. However, this does not include new comments posted to a user's diary entries (and, I would assume, stories), which means that I have to click two places to figure out if indeed I have no new comments waiting for my attention. How difficult would it be to implement that? How much more load on the server would that generate? Also, another thing that bugs me about the replies feature is that any given new reply doesn't leave the list until you view the entire story that the comment is attached to. Simply clicking on the link to the reply doesn't clear it. If both of these are more Kuro5hin.org-specific implementation issues as opposed to Scoop feature set implementation issues, let me know and I'll take my whine elsewhere...

The way I suggest this could be implemented: copy slashcode's 'message' system, and use that to generate a list user-definable messages. An event like the one you specifiy could simply have a Hook bound to the new_comment event, and append a generic message table to the diary/story author.

That way, when the user requested a list of recent replies (most anything in the hotlist_flex box) it could be provided in the form of an inexpensive query that pulls from one table instead of the expensive queries that we have at the moment.

I'll eventually do this if no one else codes it first.

At the risk of sounding like a hillbilly who doesn't know his ass from his sister, how do I enable that? Or, do I have to be a paying user at K5?
