Scoop shouldn't allow mock updates.

Update [2001-2-15 18:48:13 by Inoshiro]: I agree, but Canada's failed education system has left illiterate and thus unable to read the source, much less write any changes myself.

Ideally, stuff like this would be caught by admins and deleted, but I can imagine situations on especially busy (or especially vacant) sites where they might go unnoticed.

Any idea? (none / 0) (#1)

Have you any idea on how to catch them? Search for word combination?

A solution... (none / 0) (#3)

One way to tackle this problem is to refuse submission, through the automated queue, to all stories that contain the "[Updated $time by $user]: " string.

It can be prompted that if this is a legitimate story, where the use of that combination "[Updated $time by $user]: " is needed, the story can be emailed to the editors who will submit on the author's behalf.

How is that for a solution?

The best way to go about preventing users from impersonating editors like this is to make the [ED] and [UPDATE] symbols be replaced by some text that uses tags that aren't available to normal users, or in a different color, something like that. That way it would be impossible for a user to mimic an update or editor's note as they wouldn't have the tags to do so at their disposal. Or maybe add a small graphic (for example, the 'dot' block that is used in k5) to the front of an official editor's update.
