Well, its finally out. Scoop::Ads version 0.1. And you get to be the beta tester! I checked in all of the changes to the cvs repository, and I updated this site first. I want your help in testing this though, as many eyes are better than 2. So read this story first, then mosey on over to the submit ad page and start advertising your scoop site! But read this story first, and don't report bugs I already know about :-)

Update [2001-12-31 16:58:43 by hurstdog]: I marked the bugs and features below that I fixed. The ad admin interface should be a little nicer now.

Consider this a beta release, so expect to find bugs. Here is what I already know about:

  • BUGS
    • Previewing ads with attached files doesn't work (not a problem in text ads, obviously)
    • Anonymous Users can't submit ads, even with permission, since it creates a directory called "-1" which is really hard to get rid of :) (deemed not a bug)
    • No control of whether users can submit html or javascript in their ads
    • No way to delete ads or ad properties (fixed for deleting ads)
    • No way to approve ads from the ad list page (fixed. New approve ad page)
    • Saving ads with a different ad_id than they started will overwrite any others that previously had that ad_id (fixed UI problems)
    • Seems to run really slow. (fixed, was just me :)
  • Features that still need to be implemented
    • The ads link directly to the site, they should be redirected there so we can count clickthroughs (implemented)
    • Ad stats page for users, to see the stats on the ads they submit
    • Need to be able to require advertisers to give more info about themselves, before they can submit ads (half-finished)
    • Ad weight, so they show up more often in the rotation
    • Need to be able to page through ads like you can with Story List
    • Page to show all ads
  • UI stuff
    • Quite a few others, I'm not a graphic designer :)

So post your bug reports below, no matter how insignificant.

If you want to check out the admin interface, let me know I'll change the group you're in so you can. Unfortunately, unless I recognize your nickname, or you've been on the site for a while, I won't give you Advertiser Admin access, as I don't want ads I wouldn't approve getting through. Also, if I give you access, don't change anything about anyone's ad other than your own, or I will revoke the access.

Again, please post bug reports below.

In other news, I'm leaving for about 5 days tonight, so I'll have about 3 hours checking this discussion regularly, then I'll be on intermittantly. Hopefully most of the bugs in this will be ironed out and fixed by New Years.

Anonymous Users can't submit ads, even with permission, since it creates a directory called "-1" which is really hard to get rid of :)

What's so hard about rm ./-1?

Some bugs can be documented out of existance (none / 0) (#8)
by hillct on Sun Dec 23, 2001 at 02:24:42 PM PST

Anonymous users can't submit ads huh? Is that really a problem? It seems to me that you want user accounts assoiated with each ad submitted anyway, so you can maintain advertizer histories and give discounts to those who frequantly purchase advertising (totaling some predertermined amount) and that sort of thing. Also, advertisers should be required to log in in order to view statistics on their active ad campeigns sod so fourth.

For these reasons and others I havn't thought of, It's not a bug. It's a feature.

Poor error messages (none / 0) (#11)
by ramses0 on Tue Jan 15, 2002 at 09:19:44 PM PST

Hi.

Got an error when I tried posting my ad. It's pretty unfriendly to PHB-style advertisers.

ERROR: The text1 field is has too many characters, max length is 50 characters.

Suggested rewrite... first make the "ERROR:" part customizeable, it's possible that people would want to put a graphic there, or make it non-shoutcaps. Secondly, "text1 field" is pretty generic, especially since I don't think the label matches up with the error message.

"Your advertisement text has ## too many characters. Maximum length for this ad is 50."

There was no visual feedback as to how many characters I had consumed, and I had to resort to counting each character individually to get it right. Also, you might as well make the textarea 25x2, so that the apparent size is closer to the actual allowed size.

Bug: link in preview (none / 0) (#12)
by xriso on Sat Jan 19, 2002 at 04:37:32 PM PST

The link shown in the previewed ad points to kuro5hin/something/redirect (i forget what exactly), which means that the submitter can't check whether it goes to the right place or not!

Click Throughs (none / 0) (#17)
by codemonkey uk on Thu Jan 31, 2002 at 04:07:02 AM PST

Okay, I've submitted a ad, and had it approved. I then refreshed scoop until my ad popped up (obsesive compulsive, or dedicated beta tester - you decide), and clicked through on it. Just to see if it worked. It did.

Sort of.

The report on the Your Ads page says "Click Throughs: 0" - when I know there should be at least one.

Not a big deal for me (*sob*), but you don't want to be underselling your own sevice...

Post colon disappearance (none / 0) (#18)
by mrBlond on Tue Feb 12, 2002 at 12:42:08 PM PST

After previewing, the text after the colon disappeared in the 'Ad Title:' input box.

My ad title was 'Wishlist: "Highest rated first" order', but on the 2nd preview it was just 'Wishlist:'. Could it have been the double quote (")?

...well, I hope you received it, but at my end it worked just fine.

Ad feature requrest (none / 0) (#21)
by janra on Wed Feb 27, 2002 at 08:57:11 PM PST

Since the ads on k5 are coming "soon", there's a feature I'd really like to see implemented before it goes live.

Yes, I've mentioned it before, on k5. Let us buy more than one ad at a time.

Since rusty said he was thinking about a $12 minimum purchase, just so he doesn't have all income eaten up by CC processing fees, I'd like to be able to buy 4-5 different ads at the minimum run (say it's 1000, at $3/1000, as mentioned on k5) and pay for them all at once. I don't want to spent $12 on just one ad right away, nor do I want 4-5 transactions on my CC on the same day for multiple instances of essentially the same thing.

Since scoop.k5 doesn't require payment for ads, I can't see if you can submit an ad right to the end, the create another one, and then pay for both at once. (Not that I'm saying you should start charging for ads here, though ;-)

Eventually, I'd like to see impressions and ads separated, so I could, for example, buy $30 of impressions, then assign them to ads as I saw fit. For example, I want to try out 4-5 different ads at the minimum number of impressions, then when they're almost expired, put the rest of the impressions on the most successful (or on a new ad, which I can make identical to the most successful, if altering the number of impressions for a running ad is too complicated). Minimizing the number of CC transactions will help everybody except the CC companies :-)
