Moving from Phplog - Not a Perl Hacker - Would like to be able to .... Feature Requests

Hi,

I currently run a small weblog using phpweblog. I have a number of categories down the left hand side in a block and the only moderation I need is for me to verify any submissions. Works great for a small site with one moderator...

However - I'm now planning a much bigger site (bigger in terms of features - I cant determine the number of hits - I'll have to suck that and see) . I pretty much want to have it look like my phpweblog site (running the geekforum theme) - a number of news categories, the user can read all the posts in a category by clicking on one or they can just read all the lastest submissions on the front page. But I'd also like to be able to have each category managed by one or more moderators (with me having overall control over the moderators).

Anon. postings and comments will be allowed, and the user should be logged in to leave these - else thye only get read access.

With phpweblog I pretty much just installed apache/php/mysql, installed phpweblog, clicked a few buttons, entered some heading and hey presto a bunch of news categories and a simple moderation scheme. (It doesnt have the fine grained moderation I need for the new site). And that was it - left it running and it just worked - didnt edit any php etc.

I have apache/mod_perl up as well now and want to know if I can achieve what I want to do above with scoop, and without having to write any perl (or minimal amount). Also will I have to hack around a lot to change the theme - or is there a ready collection of themes to play with.

I just kind of want to plug in scoop and use it - I know I'm probably being lazy - but I was spoiled by phpweblog :-) Any helpful advise on whether I should be looking at scoop or elsewhere would be useful. Thanks.

a little more work... (none / 0) (#1)

unfortunately scoop isn't known for its ease of install. It goes 100% smoothly for some people, and for some people its a battle. The most common problems are documented in the faq though. Don't let me scare you though :-) If you have any problems there is usually someone who can help you set stuff up in #scoop on irc.slashnet.org and our mailing list is very helpful. (scoop-help)

On to the features you need. Regarding commenting, anonymous and not, etc. No problem. Regarding the per-section moderators, thats not fully implemented. Right now the per-section permission levels control whether a specified group can read or post comments or stories. It doesn't get as fine grained as to who can edit specific stories. Though that would be a really handy feature.

Right now we have no themes for socop either. We're working on how to make that work, it pretty much involves moving over to css and xhtml. Then just changing the css definitions. That will happen later though, as there are some other big projects that take priority right now (like the ad server). That might be added eventually though, if someone implements it or I get a bit more free time.

Hope that answers your questions, if you have any trouble installing, don't hesitate to ask everyone in #scoop or mail the scoop-help list with your questions. It should go pretty smoothly.
