"Read Message" management. Feature Requests

At the moment, revisiting a discussion means you have to rely on remembering where you left off. However, some of the other web-forum software around keeps track for you of which messages you've read and which you haven't. Would this be a good thing for Scoop?

The reason I ask is because I help run a forum over on EZBoard called IWETHEY (it's an IT forum, BTW). Now EZBoard is quite a differnt type of interactive software than Scoop: Scoop is a weblog while EZBoard is more akin to the old BBS echos.

However, it does manage which messages you've read for you. For various complicated reason, I think this would be a good addition to Scoop, even though it would mean Scoop would need to become more of a "forward-only" interface. Not being a Perl hacker myself, I can only present the idea. So whaddaya say?

AS far as I can see, EZBoard (and other BBS style softwares) shows:

1. Whether an new post have been made in a particular forum.
2. Whether a new post has been made in the discussion of a particular post.

You want something like that in scoop? Translated into the context of scoop I can think of it this way:
1. Any new posts that has been voted into a particular Section after I read that section, will cause a mark (something as simple as a '*') along side the list of Section on top of the pages.
2. And once I go to the page that list down the posts in a section, instead of seeing something like " (37 comments, 286 words in body) " alongside a post I would be seeing either :"(37 comments (all new), 286 words in body) " or "(37 comments (5 new), 286 words in body)" depending on my reading status of that post/story.

Hm... that sounds like a cool idea. Implementation considered, I would say that it may mean a change in the db structure since each user's details should also contain his reading status of a particular post and a particular section. Rusty will be the best person to comment on that since I havent had much time to play and explore scoop.

What say you rusty?

The EZBoard in question has moved to its own Zope based forum at http://z.iwethey.org/forums/

I know your expertise on this. I must say we should have an online discussion on this. Writing only comments will close the discussion straight away! And will restrict the benefits from this information. organic ceylon cinnamon
