Running the latest CVS release of Scoop on Red Hat Linux 8.0 / Apache 1.3.29 + mod_perl, BigandBeautiful.org has been extensively rewritten both externally and internally.
A lot of the internal Perl code (*.pm) was modified, all the graphics were replaced, and extensive CSS formatting was applied. The latter is what required much of the internal rewriting, in order to add class tags to buttons, fields, and the like.
The external HTML (that is, all the HTML that you can modify through the web interface) was also heavily modified. The default column layout was reversed (menus to the left, stories center, and informational boxes to the right.) Additionally, the menu and informational boxes were made to be intelligent about their size, and the "master" table which controls the three columns (default_template and index_template) was set to *,100%,*. In other words, if all the boxes in the left or right columns are turned off, the center will expand to fill the screen rather than leaving whitespace all the way down the side.
Last but not least, a heavily JavaScript-dependent language bar was added to the bottom of each page, which gives the user the option of viewing the current page in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, or Chinese. It is powered by Babblefish, and uses images for links since few browsers obey the UTF-8 encoding that each page requests -- resulting in garbled labels under the flags.
The topic icons are converted PNG graphics from the Crystal SVG icon set over at KDE-Look.org.
